YMSC close in on second straight title
Weather permitting, Premier Division leaders Young Men's Social Club can take another giant leap towards a second straight league title with victory over a Cleveland County side still reeling from the effects of last week's Eastern Counties meltdown.
Cleveland lost to champions St.David's in the final after placing themselves in a commanding position and they can hardly expect any sympathy from title-chasing Social Club who are again within striking distance of glory.
Mathematically, Cleveland still have an outside chance of league glory themselves but as coach Clay Smith stressed earlier this week, qualifying for next season's Belco Cup is presently at the top of the club's list of priorities and therefore Social Club, who have lost wicketkeeper-batsman Detroy Smith to a season ending leg injury, could have a fight on their hands at Wellington Oval tomorrow.
Cleveland are also scheduled to see action today against relegation threatened St.George's in a Premier Division make-up match at Wellington Oval, while First Division sides Willow Cuts take on Western Counties rivals Somerset Bridge in a contest the former must win to keep their league title and promotion hopes alive.
At Sea Breeze Oval, champions Cleveland will look to defend their Junior Eastern Counties title against challengers Bailey's Bay in today's final round.
Elsewhere tomorrow, reigning Belco Cup champions Southampton Rangers, who trail Social Club by four points with two games in hand, are away to Police at Police Field. The last time these two clubs met Rangers easily prevailed but with the stakes much higher they now find themselves in a must win situation if they are to overhaul Social Club for the title and sip champagne come season's end.
Rangers will welcome batsman and occasional spinner Dion Stovell and player/coach Janeiro Tucker back in the fold, but have lost the services of skipper Malachi Jones who is now attending college abroad for the remainder of the season.
Meanwhile, the race for the First Division title and promotion will continue to heat up tomorrow as leaders PHC (18 points) are away to second-placed Willow Cuts (14 pts) at Somerset Cricket Club, with third-placed Warwick (13 pts) poised to do battle against rebuilding Western Stars at Lords in a match originally scheduled for today.
Bailey's Bay, one of three other teams still in contention for league and promotion honours, have had their crunch match against Leg Trappers postponed.
