Young athletes Bahamas bound

Bahamas bound Athletes training for CAC Games, in the Front Jahmari Suhon, David Jones, Esaiah Lister and Aaliyah Nolan

Bermuda's up and coming track athletes will have an opportunity to make a name for themselves when they compete in the CAC Age Group Championships next week in Bahamas – in both pentathlon and heptathlon.

The Championships will see the 11-12 boys' and girls' competing in five events and the 13-14 boys and girls taking part in seven events.

The squad travel to Nassau early next week with the competition scheduled for June 18 and 19.

Those athletes heading to the Championships have qualified by earning points during recent BTFA meets at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

Competitors finishing first and second in the points standings over combined events were selected.

All eight of the athletes will be competing this weekend in multiple events at the Bermuda National Championships as they prepare for the pentathlon and heptathlon competition.

Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president Donna Watson is optimistic about the prospects of the athletes medalling, although a some will be at a disadvantage in certain events.

"Comparing the performances of our athletes to the other Caribbean islands, I feel our team has a great chance of bringing home individual medals and probably team medals," said Watson.

"These athletes have been very dedicated, consistent and have adjusted well to the new events they have had to learn for this meet including the hurdles and shot put. They are shaping up nicely."

Head coach Cal Simons and team manager Jarita Dill will accompany the athletes in the Caribbean.
