Young riders second to Jamaica in final round of CEA competition
Bermuda finished in second place to hosts Jamaica in the final competition of the Caribbean Equestrian Association's Junior Jumping Competition in Kingston last month. And while Jamaica won the overall title for 2009, Bermuda finished in fourth place behind second-place Barbados and third-place Cayman. Trinidad finished in fifth place.
At the final round in Jamaica, Tyler Lopes had replaced an injured Jaeda Smith and along with his team-mate, Katie Moniz, rode four extremely slick rounds on day one of the competition. Lopes posted a double clear with Moniz having an unlucky rail resulting in four faults for the team. Day one's results had the Bermuda team leading into day two.
The second day often sees the demise of some of the teams with the horses showing signs of fatigue from day one of the competition. Jamaica put the pressure on in day two when their 16 and under rider, Briana Schwapp, went clear on her horse who had eliminated the Cayman and Trinidad riders the day before.
This left Moniz to ride Schwapp's horse in round four, the most crucial round of the day. Lopes had two rails in rounds three and four which resulted in a tally of 20 faults for Bermuda until Moniz took the reins.
Moniz also had a rail down in the third round and had a refusal with Schwapp's horse which left Bermuda in second place.
