For the first time in ten years, the St. George’s darts team defeated their twin town rivals Lyme Regis, of England, in the Flights Across the Atlantic Darts Challenge. In a unique twist to the annual event, a webcam link up between St. George’s Dinghy Club and the Nag’s Head, in Dorset, was used to keep track of each team’s scores rather than having them relayed over the telephone. The West End team, made up of five men and two women, fell behind in Saturday’s first game but stormed back to win 3-2 to claim the trophy for only the third time in 15 years.Lacey Jennings, the St. George’s skipper, said they were thrilled to finally win the battle of the bragging rights over Lyme Regis, who have dominated the competition over the years.“It’s nice to win as it’s the first time we’ve beaten them for ten years,” said the 26-year-old. “We’ve already told them that we’ve saved a nice spot on the shelf for the trophy!”Jennings admitted the webcam link up, which saw pictures relayed to each location and shown on large TV screens, had slightly interrupted the flow of the game but hadn’t made the match any less enjoyable.“It’s a little bit disjointed (playing via webcam) and when you’re playing with seven in a team you can get a bit ‘cold’ before you throw again,” she said.Jennings revealed the team celebrated their victory by blasting out Queen’s “We are the Champions” on the sound system at the end of the best of five leg match.
