Champions!
St George's “Mr Cup Match” Lionel Cann showed nerves of steel to guide his side to a dramatic –two-wicket triumph over Somerset at Wellington Oval yesterday.Chasing 148 to win, Cann steered the champions over the finish line in emphatic style by smacking a six and a four before dropping his knees and pumping his fists in a victory salute. The East Enders were in deep trouble at 84 for six with Somerset smelling blood after a destructive piece of bowling by spinner Joshua Gilbert, who claimed five wickets for 30 runs.Cann, who rode his luck having been dropped by Gilbert early on in his innings, steadied the ship and later described his unbeaten 49 as the most important knock of his Cup Match career.“They had their chance to get me out but the ball slipped through (Gilbert's) hands,” said Cann.“I've scored a century, I've scored 990 runs, but this tops them all...”Somerset, skittled out for a paltry 97 on the opening day, played their part in one of the most thrilling Classics in recent years, fighting their way back in the game with a gutsy second innings batting display.Promising colt Kamau Leverock top scored for the West Enders with 43 as they made 238 yesterday to set St George's a challenging total.“It was difficult out there, to come up here and get the cup from them was always going to be a difficult mission, to day we failed but we will leave here with our heads held high,” said Somerset skipper Jekon Edness.“We could have gone defensive and blocked the game up but we went for the win which in turn gave them a chance.“We battled for two days with them (St. George's), they fought for the cup as much as we did and I have to salute them.“This year it didn't fall our way and hopefully next year it does.”While this year's Cup Match will be remembered for Cann's ice cool batting heroics, it was St George's seamer Stefan Kelly laid who the foundations for their victory by snaring ten wickets in the match.Kelly was the mainstay of the St George's attack, bowling 33.3 overs during the two days, and finishing with figures of 10 wickets for 99 runs for the match. The St David's man was named Most Valuable Player for his efforts. For more pictures of Cup Match click here and here
