Major sporting events will benefit from Ministry money

The Department of Tourism will pump nearly $300,000 into Bermuda sport over the next six months.Tourism Minister Patrice Minors announced yesterday that her department will spend some $270,000 on four major sporting events including the Argo Group Gold Cup in October and the SheRox Triathlon in November. Also benefitting from Government support will be the World Rugby Classic, and the Bermuda Marathon Weekend, formerly known as International Race Weekend.Gold Cup and Marathon Weekend organisers will receive the largest slice of the pie, both getting $80,000 to spend, while $60,000 has been earmarked for the triathlon and $50,000 for rugby.“Sports tourism events provide our overseas sales teams with a platform to showcase Bermuda to consumers,” said Minors. “These events have a direct impact on many of the Island’s residents and we must all do our part to ensure their success.“We at the Bermuda Department of Tourism cannot wait to do our part to support and host what has proven in the past to be some incredibly fun and exciting events in the latter months of the year.”Organisers will be allowed to use the money as they see fit, and will also be supported by Tourism plugging the events on their website and through a variety of social media outlets.“I imagine the use of those funds would be for the actual operation and putting on the event as a whole,“ said Minors, “we don’t go as far as to direct how it should be use. But obviously we wish the event to be successful in its use.“We within the Department of Tourism also have the means of promoting the events on our website, through various social media, on our Facebook page, Twitter.“We have the opportunity to assist with the promotion of it, because it’s not just about the success of the event but everyone playing a part in making it a success.”
