Simpson and Chetty declared Around the Island winners

Tonka Simpson and Seth Chetty have been declared FB class winners for this year’s Around the Island Race.Bermuda Powerboat Association (BPBA) announced the duo as the winners following a nearly two hour long executive committee meeting at an undisclosed venue last night.Simpson’s 19-foot Phantom clinched class honours and finished third overall for the second straight year during last Sunday’s race after covering the slightly altered course in a time of 49 minutes and 19 seconds. However, post-race celebrations were cut short when senior rival Stephen DeSilva (Team Point Mart) accused Simpson of racing with an “oversized” engine block and filed a protest to the race committee. Prior to last night’s official ruling Simpson’s Yamaha 150 V Max engine was subjected to a thorough inspection by an independent “qualified technician” and found to be within class regulations.“After a review and an inspection the committee has decided that the unofficial results from the FB class are now official and will stand as they are,” BPBA Commodore Brian Smith told said last night. An elated Simpson, who came to within ten seconds of the FB class race record, said he never doubted his name would be cleared.“We were inspected by a qualified Yahama technician who did a thorough check on our motor and did not find anything wrong,” he said.DeSilva, who has contemplated retiring from the sport, declined to comment. The veteran racer finished second behind Simpson competing with son Brandon in their 19- foot Phantom.Jamal Williams and Rodney Denbroke rounded off the podium finishers in third respectively in their 18-foot Marshan.Claiming line honours this year in a record time of 42 minutes and 29 seconds were Bobby DeCosta and Chris Wells in their 23-foot D class Bat Boat. Also setting race records in their respective classes were David Selley and Andrew Osbourne (49.46) in the Stock D class, Ricky Sousa and Stephen Bridges (34.26) in theS class and Brian Lightbourne and Kenny Mathie (one hour, one minute and 49 seconds) in the Thundercats.
