We can’t be scared of Town
Somerset Trojans striker Malachi Jones has called on his side to show up and show their talent in the first Friendship semi-final against Dandy Town at Wellington Oval on Boxing Day.The two sides will fight for the right to face either Devonshire Cougars and Southampton Rangers in the final on New Year’s Day.Last season’s competition saw Trojans knock Town out of the competition at the first hurdle, but found themselves wanting in the final as they lost to North Village.Although they did the job 12 months ago, Jones wants his teammates, especially the younger players, to get the jitters out of their system early as they look to progress in the competition.“We are ready for it and the spirit is high so it is about getting the job done on the day and let the rest take care of itself,” he said. “We are waiting for the day and hopefully can come together and get the result.“We are buoyed to win the next competition and right now we just want to look at the results and performances we put together.“The younger guys are still trying to come through and we want to show them that any team in Bermuda can be beat, the name Dandy Town sounds fearful if you are cautious but we know we can get the result and show them that this is our destiny in our own hands.“They came to us in the league and beat us with a second string team so we need to put a stamp on this to show everyone that we aren’t scared of them and that the game is played on the field.”In their only clash this season Town ran out 4-0 winners at Somerset Cricket Club, a result that Jones wants rectified if the club are to continue on their road to restoring their name.Trojans already hold the first piece of silverware of the season, the Dudley Eve, and exorcised the demon that is Village in the process of their triumph.“If we can get the win it can help us in the sense that we play them in the league right off the bat on their turf so when it comes down to it we need to start building confidence towards the second half of the season and we need to get the gears rolling.“The past is the past and we need to leave our past results where they are and show up on the day and get the job done and move on.”The Boxing Day headliner will precede Hamilton Parish and BAA in the first match which kicks off at 12.30pm, followed by the match of the day.The second semi finals of the two respective competitions will see Devonshire Cougars clash with Southampton Rangers, while Devonshire Colts will take on Somerset Eagles at Goose Gosling Field next Thursday night.
