Young guns given chance to shine
Dandy Town coach Jomar Wilkinson believes the Christmas competition provides teams with a chance to further bolster their ranks and give fringe players a chance to shine.Town, who advanced to the Friendship Trophy with their Boxing Day win over Somerset Trojans, have used the festive tournament as a chance to blood youngsters and integrate college players who have returned home.Giving the senior and more influential players a rest on the sideline to prepare for a second half push, Wilkinson has called on his stable of young studs to come in and show their full worth at the senior level.“In a time like this, where teams have a lot of college players coming back and want to get back into the fold, it is good to have games that allow those who are on the fringe to come in and get minutes and show what they are capable of,” he said.“We have depth so it is good to have these players still coming out and putting in the hard work to show that they can be valuable.”Lorenzo Simmons is a prime example of a player who has put in time and effort into his play for the club, rewarding Wilkinson for his faith and belief in his system by putting him on to devastating effect yesterday.Simmons scored the equaliser with his first touch of the ball. With the club in the final, it will give the youngsters within the squad another chance to taste top flight action and potentially win the first piece of silverware of the season.“Players like Lorenzo, who got us into the match by coming on a sub and doing what he did, shows the other players that this can be done as long as you work hard for the cause both in games and also in training.“We have a good nucleus and the players really look to work for one another, there isn’t any isolated figures in the camp and if there is any tension it gets sorted out and we move on because the game as a whole is bigger then the players and the clubs.“I am really enjoying this right now because it gives you as a coach a chance to see what players can play where and the level that they are on, and we as a team are on good level.”
