Jeffers is the best Cann’s ever seen
Cameron Jeffers of Warwick Workman’s Club has been named Logic First Division Player of the Week after his performances with the ball last weekend against PHC.
Jeffers claimed six wickets for 30 runs off eight overs to lead Warwick to victory over their neighbour, and Lionel Cann, the Warwick coach, believes there is more to come from the 14-year-old whom he describes as one of the best spin bowling talents he has seen.
“We got him [at Warwick] when he was 12 and is a student of the game, sleeps, eats and drinks cricket and at night his mom has to turn off the TV and radio because he’s watching and listening to cricket,” Cann said.
“He walks around Saltus, where I work, with his cricket bat and wanted to play senior cricket when he was twelve but the [Bermuda] Cricket Board wouldn’t let him. He’s unique in terms of a spin bowler and Shane Warne is his idol.
“Everything is cricket with him and he’s a wrist spinner and is the best spinner I’ve seen in my senior years. I’ve already told the Board that he needs to be joining the senior national team, just to be around them.”
Added Cann: “With him it’s 100 per cent cricket and you’ll never see a student like him. He’s going to be going away to school soon in England so he can develop his talent. He’s aspiring to play county cricket. I’ve never seen anybody love cricket as much as he does.”
Jeffers is playing against cricketers who are twice his age and he has shown he can hold his own against senior players. Next month Jeffers will be a part of the Bermuda Under-19 team for the World Cup qualifiers here involving Canada, the United States and Suriname, starting on July 5.
“It is good playing a lot of cricket and getting match experience that’s what is going to make or break us in this tournament”, said Jeffers, who is looking forward to tomorrow’s clash with promotion hopefuls Devonshire Rec.
“Warwick Workman’s team has a lot of confidence going into Sunday’s match against Devonshire Rec.”
Janeiro Tucker, the Southampton Rangers captain, was named the Logic Premier Division Player of the Week following his match winning performance last weekend against Bailey’s Bay. Tucker claimed two for 39 runs in ten overs and then scored 80 not out to lead Rangers to a seven wicket victory.
