Stage set for island’s first aquathlon

A little bit different: the new format removes cycling from the race (File photograph by Nicola Muirhead)

Similar to a triathlon, but with two sets of running to go with the swim, the aquathlon will be in the same format as that used for the Cozumel ITU Aquathlon World Championships this year, starting with a 2.5k run, a 1,000 metres swim and a second 2.5k run for the seniors around Cooper’s Island.

For the top three male and female finishers in the full race there will be prize money of $750 for first place, $500 for second and $250 for third.

The race has promoted overseas as “warm waters, scenic course, great location, and prize money to the top three overall”.

There will also be medals for the top three finishers in the adult age groups, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and over. There will also be a relay division and junior age group races for 11-12 and 13-15 age groups.

The 11-12 competitors will run a 1k race, swim 200 metres and then finish with a 1k run, while the older juniors will run a 2k race, 400 metres swim and another 2k run.

Race packet pickup is today at Grotto Bay from 4pm to 7pm with races starting tomorrow with the men’s and women’s races at 2pm and 2.30pm, before the juniors start their races at 3pm with the 13 to 15 year olds, and 3.30pm for the 11 to 12 year olds.
