Double triumph for Nisbett in Beijing

Up and over: Nisbett was in top form at the Longines FEI World Cup China League competition in Beijing

The Bermuda Equestrian Federation have hailed Patrick Nisbett’s double-winning success at last weekend’s Longines FEI World Cup China League competition in Beijing.

Nisbett recorded victories in the 1.40 Open Speed class and 1.50 Grand Prix Qualifier at the competition.

“The Bermuda Equestrian Federation would like to congratulate Patrick on his recent wins in China and wish him ongoing success throughout the season,” the BEF said in a statement.

“Bermudian equestrians have achieved a tremendous amount of success in recent years, having proudly represented the island at the highest levels of competition including national and regional FEI competitions, Continental Games, Olympic Games and World Cup Competitions.”

The competition was a CSI2*W World Cup competition with the majority of the riders hailing from China or Hong Kong. Nisbett was among five international riders that were invited to compete.

Because of strict quarantine rules in China, foreign riders had to compete on borrowed horses, a significant handicap when competing at this level.

Nisbett got his campaign off to a flying start after winning the 1.40 Open Speed Class on the opening day of the three-part competition, finishing almost five seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

Lightening then struck twice for Nisbett who chalked up another impressive win on the second day of the competition after pipping British Olympic gold-medal winner Ben Maher for top honours in the 1.50 Grand Prix Qualifier.

Nisbett, who is based in Belgium, was ultimately denied a hat-trick of victories on the third and final day of the competition after striking the rails twice on A Termie, the 11-year-old bay gelding he had been riding throughout the competition, to finish eighth.

“While a hat-trick was not to be, Nisbett’s outstanding success at this level of competition highlighted his ability to effectively challenge some of the best rider’s in the world in international show jumping competitions,” the BEF statement continued.

Nisbett’s success follows closely on the heels of Philip Correia’s historical silver-medal display at last month’s FEI World Jumping Challenge in Morocco.

The former Bermuda Driving Horse and Pony Club president posted clear rounds on all four days of competition to claim second place and become the first Bermudian to win a medal in the final of the competition.

It was the biggest achievement of Correia’s career as he competed against the top two competitors from the ten regions as well as two from the host country.
