The Bermuda Under-17 women’s football team fly out next Saturday for the Concacaf Championship in Nicaragua, which begins with their group B match against Canada on April 20.

The Bermuda Football Association confirmed the squad of 20, which will be captained by Danni Watson and includes six overseas-based players.

Striker LeiLanni Nesbeth is in school in Britain while Nia Christopher, Jenna Rempel, Jaden Masters, Tianna Mullan and Delia Ebbin are all in education in the United States and will join the team en route to Nicaragua.

“We’re looking to compete and do well, it’s the first time that all of the girls will have played at this level so we’re going into the unexpected but looking to do our best,” Vance Brown, the assistant coach, said.

“Training has been going well, we had a training tour where we played a couple of matches and the girls have been training five days a week so preparation has been good. We’re up with the big girls now!”

Bermuda qualified for the Championship after some outstanding performances in the Caribbean Qualifying Championships in St Lucia and Haiti last year. They spent a week in Florida in February where they played two matches.

The matches will be played in Managua, Nicaragua with Bermuda playing Canada at the Nicaragua National Football Stadium and then taking on the US two days later before closing out the group stage against Costa Rica on April 24.

Group A will be made up of hosts Nicaragua, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Haiti.

The top two teams from the two groups will move on to the semi-finals, after which the Concacaf champion and second and third placed teams will qualify for the Fifa Under-17 World Cup, which is scheduled for Uruguay in November and December.
