Bermuda breeze past Barbados

Bermuda’s squash players continued their strong form at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Cali, Colombia, by winning their first team match today.

Micah Franklin, Noah Browne and Nick Kyme helped Bermuda to a 3-0 victory over Barbados in their opening group A qualification match.

Franklin beat Khamal Cumberbatch 11-4, 11-8, 11-4, Browne defeated Shawn Simpson 11-6, 9-11, 11-3 and Kyme triumphed over Rhett Cumberbatch 11-3, 11-9, 11-2.

Bermuda lost their second group match against a strong Mexico team 2-1.

Franklin lost to Alfredo Vergara Avila 11-8, 11-3, 11-6, Browne was defeated 11-8, 14-12, 11-9, 11-9, while Kyme appeared to have been awarded a walkover victory.

Bermuda take on St Vincent and Grenadines in their final group game today.

Franklin and Browne won Bermuda’s first medal at the Games yesterday after winning bronze in the men’s doubles competition.

Sailor Benn Smith finished eighth overall in the men’s Laser class at the CAG Games in Barranquilla, Colombia, yesterday.

The 18-year-old endured a difficult day at Puerto Velero, placing tenth and eleventh in the final two races of the competition.

Smith dropped his worst finish — his eleventh place in the final race — and ended up on 61 points from his nine races.

Ignacio Maegli, of Guatemala, won the event after finishing on eight points. He won all eight of his races.

In swimming, Jesse Washington came seventh in heat two of the men’s 200 metres freestyle in a time of 1min 56.29sec. Jorge Andrés César Iga, of Mexico, won the race in 1:51.13.

Washington and Madelyn Moore will both be action in the 50 freestyle tomorrow.

Meanwhile the island’s boxers take to the ring in Barranquilla in the round of 16 tomorrow.

Tyler Christopher faces Luis Rodriguez, of Puerto Rico, in the middleweight division at 5pm, while Andre Lambe meets Alexander Rangel, of Colombia, at 9pm in the welterweight class at 9pm.
