Lewis builds on form in Switzerland

Jessica Lewis continued her impressive form in Switzerland with another podium-place finish while competing in the LA-SM Rollstuhlsport International Track Meet.

Having claimed two top finishes, including victory at the ParAthletics WPA Grand Prix and a further first-place finish in the Daniela Jutzeler Memorial International Track Meet, last week, the Bermudian wheelchair racer built on that momentum with a host of further promising displays.

On the opening day of competition, Lewis took to the track to compete in the T53 Women’s 100m race and narrowly missed out on a place on the podium, finishing fourth in a time of 17.62 seconds. Samantha Kinghorn, of Great Britain took the top honours, winning in a time of 16.96, ahead of Angela Ballard, of Australia in 17.07, with Kelsey LeFevour of the United States, completing the top three in 17.57.

Lewis was unable to build on that promising display as she competed in the T53 Women’s 400m race but had to settle for an eighth-place finish, crossing the line in 1min 00.61sec. Having won silver in the 100m race, Ballard clinched victory this time round, winning the race in a time of 55.33, ahead of Chelsea McClammer, of the United States in 55.96, with Kinghorn third in 56.17.

Lewis returned for the second day of competition and enjoyed her best performance from the event, finishing third in the T53 Women’s 200m race crossing the line in 30.34. Kinghorn added a second overall victory from the competition, winning in a time of 29.05, ahead of Catherine Debrunner of Sweden, who finished second in 29.30.

However, Lewis was unable to build on that performance in the T53 Women’s 800m race, where she had to settle for a tenth-place finish in a time of 2min 00.82secs. Madison de Rozario, of Australia, was the first finisher of the T53 class, finishing in 01:46.42, ahead of McClammer in 01:47.72, with Kinghorn completing the top three in 01:47.96.
