Spirit Of Bermuda enjoyed a fine debut in the British European Breeders Fund EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes at Glorious Goodwood yesterday. The Bermudian-owned thoroughbred, a 210,000 Guineas purchase at Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up in June, was sent off at 8-1 and finished strongly to win the seven-furlong race by a head from Iconic Queen in second place. The two-year-old, ridden by Tom Marquand and trained by William Haggas, is part of the same Bermuda Thoroughbred Racing syndicate as Queen Of Bermuda, Pink Sands and Skymax.Maureen Haggas, the wife and assistant trainer to her husband William, told Goodwood Press & Media that the filly ran an impressive race.“Spirit Of Bermuda came from the breeze-ups, so they are always a little bit more streetwise,” she said “She has been really nice and straightforward. “We felt able to run her quite quickly as she has worked nicely and done everything we have asked. She behaved immaculately today and ran a nice race. She was green and Tom Marquand just wanted to get her home nicely. She just needed to enjoy it today and I think there is plenty of improvement to come.“Spirit Of Bermuda handled the track well and she is a big filly, but she is a lovely, classy filly.“You would stay at seven furlongs at the moment, but she will get further looking at her.”
