Willett ‘Bill’ Anderson honoured by Blue Waters Angler’s Club
Willett “Bill” Anderson, one of the oldest surviving members of Blue Waters Angler’s Club, has been made an honorary life member of the historic club.
Anderson, who joined the organisation in 1959 at the age of 28, had the honour bestowed in an elaborate setting surrounded by family and friends, with club president Ray Bean acknowledging the long-serving member’s contribution.
The 93-year-old angler, who remains actively involved in deep sea fishing, joined the Hamilton-based club within a year of its formation in 1958 with the encouragement of founding member Reid Johansen.
He was inspired to join the club to fulfil an enormous passion for game and recreational fishing for food as a charitable contribution to family and friends which he continues to this day.
Among the many memories Anderson has during his time with the club is having the opportunity to fish with former Governor, Lord Martonmere, during the time of segregation in the island.
“Reid Johansen made it all happen by identifying the coloured game fishermen who were not allowed to compete in prestigious local events because of segregation,” Anderson said.
“But the Governor of Bermuda also fished along with us out of Blue Waters Anglers Club.”
