Constituency #24 - Warwick South East - Hon. W. Alexander Scott, JP, MP

Hon. W. Alexander Scott, JP, MP

n 1985 he was appointed to the Senate; Opposition Leader 1989; elected to the House of Assembly in October 1983; Deputy Leader of the Opposition 1986; Campaign Chairman during the 1989 general election; Minister in the first PLP Cabinet in 1998.

He was sworn in as Premier of Bermuda on July 28, 2003. His tenure from 2003 through November 11, 2006 ushered in an era of community awareness and involvement in governance that was heralded as a cornerstone of his administration.

His political career spans some 29 years, earning him enormous respect among his colleagues. He has the distinction of having Her Majesty the Queen approve that he retain the title "Honourable", in view of his appointment and service to the community as a Minister of the Government and Premier of Bermuda.

Again, this honour recognizes his many notable accomplishments while he held the office of Premier. He pressed for and achieved the lowering of tuition for Bermudian students seeking higher education in the UK; piloted the creation of an Ombudsman for Bermuda through Parliament, thus providing citizens with an advocate (free of charge) to challenge government when they believe they have suffered an injustice. His Cabinet generated over sixty initiatives referred to as the 'Social Agenda' aimed at helping the "Have Nots Have More". He passed legislation making incarceration mandatory for those found carrying a bladed weapon; and recommended that there be special patrols of "trouble spots" in our community. Immediately following the implementation of this initiative, statistics clearly showed positive results.

Internationally, the former Premier traveled to Washington DC and prevailed on both Congressman and Senators to consider the establishment of a US Coast Guard presence in Bermuda. Additionally he lobbied hard for a review of the 'Stop List' Policy that prevents young Bermudians who have earned a rehabilitation certificate from ever traveling to/through the US.

He spoke passionately with leaders in the UK, Caribbean and US and with Re-insurance Executives in Bermuda about the establishment of a regional/global fund that would assist small vulnerable economies against the devastating effect of seasonal hurricanes … a pilot program, based on this concept, is now in place in the Caribbean region.

Former Premier Scott became synonymous with cross ministry initiatives and public/private sector partnerships that kept Bermuda on an even keel. He will always be remembered for his platform of The Social Agenda, Sustainable Development and the introduction of a community wide discussion on Independence.

In Warwick South East, MP Scott has endeavored to address constituency and residents' concerns. He vows to utilize his many years of experience in Parliament and as Premier to put in practice the principles of Sustainable Development as they pertain to the proposed developments in the constituency. He vows to address flooding problems in the Warwick South East area while previously he worked with residents and homeowners to attend to the health concerns caused by the commercial storage of sand and aggregate at a local Quarry; and he will work with the Police to address the problem of petty theft and crime in this area.

He and his wife Olga have two children, daughter Mrs. Robyn Eve and son William Lawrence Scott.
