Constituency #26 - Warwick South Central - Premier Ewart Brown, JP, MP, MD
On October 27, 2006, Dr. the Hon Ewart F. Brown, JP, MP, was elected leader of the Party and later sworn in as Premier.
Premier Brown's political career has spanned more than three decades, starting as a student activist in Bermuda campaigning for social justice. He first won his seat in 1993 and when the PLP swept to power in 1998, he was appointed Minister of Transport. After the General Election in July 2003, he was returned to Government as the Minister of Transport and was also appointed the Deputy Premier. In July of 2004 following a Cabinet shuffle, Dr. Brown became Minister of the combined portfolio of The Ministry of Tourism and Transport.
Premier Brown has a long history in the United States as a community-minded physician, where he is the recipient of numerous awards for his dedicated and self-less service. As Medical Director of Bermuda HealthCare Services, Premier Brown endeavors to ensure all Bermudians are provided with efficient and cost-effective health care.
He has received the Physicians Recognition Award in 1977 from the American Medical Association; the Grassroots Health Award from the Sons of Watts California in 1979; the Dubois Academic Institute's Community Leadership Award in 1982; the Pacesetter Award from the NAACP in 1984; Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Marcus Garvey School in Los Angeles in 1991; and in 1993, the Scroll Award from the Union of American Physicians and Dentists.
Ewart is the son of Ewart (DA) and Helene Brown of Flatts. He attended primary and secondary schools in Bermuda. Premier Brown’s studies in the US took him to Howard University in Washington D.C., where he graduated with a B.Sc. Degree in Chemistry; four years later, he received his M.D. from Howard College of Medicine. He also earned a M.P.H. with an emphasis on Child Health, Maternal family Population Control and International Health from the University of California at Los Angeles.
As the representative for Warwick South Central, Dr Brown continues to make himself available to address constituency concerns and he maintains an open-door policy to every constituent. While it is difficult for the Premier to spend as much time as he would like in the constituency he gets regular reports from his branch team on issues that need to be addressed—and he acts on them to benefit the area. As Premier, he undertakes to continue to provide a vision for Bermuda that creates opportunities for young people, support and compassion for seniors and a vibrant, growing tourism industry. Two of his key accomplishments was the introduction of fast ferries and the steady reduction of airfares to the island. Ewart is tireless in his commitment to you, the voters in constituency 26 and to the wider electorate as Premier.
Premier Brown is married to Wanda Henton Brown, and has four sons: Kevin, Maurice, Ewart III, and Donovan. In his spare time, the Ewart enjoys travelling, exercising and as much golf as possible.
