Ministry support staff will operate out of Government schools in the next academic year, Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith said yesterday.Dame Jennifer gave an update after 100 days of being at the helm of the Ministry of Education. She added: “Right now the facilities manager is looking at individual schools for space. It is our intention to place the support services on site.“We operate on the school year and it would be disruptive to make changes mid school year to do certain things but in order to be prepared for 2011 we are currently examining the space, the needs, so everything will be in place for the new school year.”Dame Jennifer said she has reviewed the many consultants’ reports on the Island’s education system to find the best way forward. She added that some of the recommendations made in the critical Hopkins Report are irrelevant to the current state of education. When asked to expand on this she said: “Some are no longer relevant. The work that had been done by the Board of Education and by the Ministry subsequently to take from the Hopkins Report and bring it up-to-date they have done that work.“I’ll give you a small example they spoke about the two senior schools and at the time they thought one senior school was greatly disadvantaged, well anyone who has looked at the results and looked at the output now would see they two senior schools are just about even.“I would not say what he found is the same situation today, that is just a small example.”She added that the Adopt a School programme, which has private individuals or construction companies donate money or labour to improving the Island’s primary school infrastructure, has raised $100,000.Dame Jennifer concluded: “During the upcoming Budget, I intend to demonstrate the focus of our commitment to teaching and learning and outline some of the initiatives we intend to implement to move the system forward in a positive manner and with the best interests of our children at the forefront.”
