Michael Dunkley is one of the most respected and admired Members of Parliament. He's known as a man who does his homework thoroughly. Once he sinks his teeth into an issue, he won't let go until he has either sorted it out, or made sure the public knows where the failure lies.

In Devonshire East, he was so popular with their constituents that the Party has decided to run him in a marginal district, Smith's North, in the next election. It's his belief that the people of that area have been poorly served by their political representatives in the past, and he is glad of the opportunity to build new relationships there, with a view to a more effective partnership in the future. When the move to Smith's North was announced, he commented: “The perception in politics is that politicians have gone away from representing people. I will represent them.”

Mr Dunkley was elected Leader of the Oppostion in April 2007. During his career, he has held some of the most important posts in the Shadow Cabinet, having had responsibility for Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety and for Health and Family Services. He is currently Shadow Minister without Portfolio.

After attending school in Bermuda, Mr Dunkley went to George Washington University and the University of Richmond in the United States, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Scholar Athlete Award.

Since he came back to Bermuda, Mr Dunkley has run the family business that supplies Bermuda with milk - Dunkley's Dairy. He has also been involved in public service for most of his working life.

An active sportsman, Mr Dunkley is immediate past president of The Mid-Ocean Club and a member of the Bermuda Athletic Association, the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association and Coral Beach Club. In his spare time, he's a golfer and keep fit enthusiast. In his younger days, he played first-division cricket and soccer.

He and his wife, Pamela, are the proud parents of two children - Christine, born in 1987, and Brooke, born in 1990.

Michael is a keen sportsman and family man. In his senior year at the University of Richmond, he made the Dean's List and was recognised as a varsity athlete. He is an accomplished golfer who won the club championship at Mid Ocean three times and played both first division football and cricket. He believes it is important to stay active and does so by playing squash and working out on a daily basis.

A Plan for Smith's North

* Continuing to work towards the reopening of Loyal Hill Pass.

* Ensuring that our children can play safely on estate roads through the use of speed bumps, "children playing" signs and increasing the number of street lights.

* Eradicating drug dealing and usage by working with the Police and increasing Police presence in the area.

* Encouraging the development of neighbourhood watch schemes.

* Addressing the lack of parking in Flatts and exploring ways to reduce traffic congestion in the area.
