Kim Swan got a taste for politics when he was a student at the Berkeley Institute and participated in a school sports boycott to protest the lack of black studies in the school curriculum. Five years later, he was chosen to represent Warwick Secondary School at the Bermuda Youth Parliament by the principal, the late Winton Williams - a vote of confidence that helped shape his life.
During the late 1970s, the Hon. Ralph Marshall, then the Member of Parliament for Southampton West, invited him to work for his branch office. Kim liked the idea of service to people through politics enough to stand for election in Sandys South in the 1983 election. Fighting in a PLP stronghold served as the catalyst for Kim to continue to try to contribute to his country. He has been in the forefront of politics in Bermuda ever since, writing letters and articles for the daily newspaper, making speeches and serving on numerous Government Boards and Committees.
Kim ran for Parliament in 1983, 1998 and 2003. He has represented the United Bermuda Party in the Senate since 1998, serving as Opposition Senate Leader since 2001. He has been an outspoken voice for a more equitable Bermuda and spearheaded a highly successful Island-wide petition in support of a Constitutional Conference and Referendum about the Government's proposal to alter constituency boundaries. He went to London with the then Leader of the Opposition, Dame Pamela Gordon, for talks on the matter with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
He was educated at Troy State University in Alabama, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1980. He was the first Bermudian to hold membership on the PGA European Tour and was the winner of three Bermuda Open Championships. He ran the St George's Golf Club for over 16 years, serving as the General Manager and Golf Pro.
Kim proudly states that although he was born and raised at the West End (in the White Hill, Somerset Bridge and Death Valley areas) he is "now blessed to consider St George's home." Kim, who is 49, is married to Ercinda "Cindy" Swan, the co-founder of Project Action. They are the proud parents of four children.
