Roddy Simons is part of the fabric of Warwick. The son of Joan and Roderick Sr., he has lived all his life behind St. Mary’s Church.

Roddy is a people person. He has always been deeply involved in community service from his work for Keep Bermuda Beautiful, his involvement at St. Mary’s Church as a lay reader and a member of the Church Vestry, to his role as troop leader in the Boys Brigade at Wesley Church in Hamilton.

In announcing his candidacy for Warwick South Central, Roddy is adding one more chapter to the Simons’ family tradition of community service that was started by his grandfather, H. Earlington B. Simons.

“I’m stepping forward as a candidate for the United Bermuda Party because I want to continue helping my neighbors and my country, like my father and grandfather before me,” Roddy said.

“I think I can be a positive role model in this community. While I have never left Warwick, I have lived a varied life and I believe I can use my knowledge and experience to help others. That’s just part of who I am.”

In terms of national issues, Roddy will fight for the creation of affordable housing so that young families can have a chance to own a piece of The Rock. He wants to improve the Hospital Insurance Plan and Pension Entitlements because so many seniors are struggling to get by. And he sees reform of the public education system as a moral imperative.

“I don’t think our children have ever needed us more,” he said.

Roddy’s family includes his daughters Renee and Nicole, his sister Rochelle, stepfather John and his mother Joan, who was a well-known Purvis School teacher.

Roddy is known far and wide as “Mr. Cool” because he has always worn sunglasses, even as a young boy. In 1996, he and his father started The Wheelchair Taxi Service, a successful endeavour that combined both good business sense and compassion for people in need. Roddy also loves to sing and is a member of the Ensemble Singers
