Constituency 29 Southampton East - Douglas S. J. De Couto
Home Telephone: 236-5414
Born and raised in Bermuda, this is Douglas De Couto’s first run for political office. While new to the political scene, Douglas is eager to help find ways to ensure that all Bermudians are able to access and qualify for the vast number of opportunities that exist here in Bermuda.
“I believe that we live in a great country that has a tremendous amount of potential to become an even better place. I am making this leap towards public life, as I feel it is important that as citizens we become actively involved in the future direction of Bermuda.
“The Government does not exist for its own sake. It is there to serve the people. When a government stops serving the interest of the people, it is time for a change. This election is an opportunity for people to choose a government that will focus on them and one that will be transparent and accountable.
“For the residents of Southampton East, that means decision making that improves public safety, takes better care of our seniors and improves the education of our children.”
A recipient of the 1993 Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship 1997 and of the Sir John W. Cox Graduate Scholarship, Douglas attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering in 1998, a Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1998 and Ph. D in Computer Science in 2004.
During his time at MIT Douglas served on the Campus Race Relations Committee for 3years and spent two years with the Big Brothers of Massachusetts Bay.
Now that he is home in Bermuda, Douglas is a Corporal in the Bermuda Regiment; a Trustee of the Bermuda Maritime Museum; and teaches the occasional course at the Bermuda College.
Douglas is currently working for a re-insurance company here in Bermuda.
