BPSU may call for Cabinet pay cut
The Bermuda Public Services Union will echo calls for Ministers to take a pay cut if that’s what members want, its president said.Last week, Bermuda Industrial Union president Chris Furbert called on Cabinet Ministers to take a “symbolic pay cut” after rejecting Government’s pay proposal. The blue-collar workers under the BIU umbrella include parks, sanitation and public transport workers. They were offered a wage freeze and straight time pay instead of premium pay for overtime work until the end of 2011 as Government attempts to save cash in the economic crisis.Mr Furbert rejected the request unless Ministers, most of whom earn $168,000 or more, take a cut themselves. He commented: “The workers are willing to do their part, but they want to see Government doing its part too. I think a pay cut would do it.”The Bermuda Public Services Union [BPSU] represents white-collar civil servants including lawyers, clerks and accountants. It is also in the midst of negotiations with Government.President Kevin Grant said last night: “Mr Furbert is voicing the concerns of the members. I’ve not had any calls for something like that yet from my membership. We want to get back to the negotiating table and we want to know what’s happening. If it comes to a meeting and they raise it, I will have to ask. We’re governed by what our membership requires.”A meeting has been scheduled for April 20.“My members are going to see what the BIU are asking for. When I have my meeting on the 20th who knows what they’re going to be bringing to me,” said Mr Grant.Mr Grant was not surprised to hear the BIU call for a pay cut.“People look at these things and they are not stupid. They see people making a certain amount of money. And these people [union members]are going to end up taking home less. And if I’m going to take home less I need the Ministers to take home less,” he remarked.
