New party to be called One Bermuda Alliance

John Barritt is to be the interim leader of One Bermuda Alliance

Bermuda’s new political party will be called One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) and will be headed up by UBP stalwart John Barritt. The details of the merger between the United Bermuda Party and the Bermuda Democratic Alliance have finally been confirmed after months of talks. Members are anxiously waiting to hear what people think of the new name, which was selected because it is “representative of Bermuda.”The two political parties are joining their resources in a bid to give voters “a viable alternative” at the next general election.Neither the UBP nor the BDA have yet been officially dissolved and nothing has yet been signed to say the amalgamation has taken place. But the domain name for the new party’s website has been registered. The merger is expected to take place “any day now” ready for when the House of Assembly resumes on May 13.Members of both parties are said to have agreed to Mr Barritt as the new party leader on an interim basis. The constitution states that the Opposition leader has to be a member of the House of Assembly. He is expected to be at the helm of the new party for “a good few months” until a leader can be formerly elected at the party’s convention. One source told us: “It’s true, everything has been agreed. One Bermuda Alliance is our new name and John Barritt will be leader until we have a party convention and a new leader has been elected. No date has been set for that, it will be a good few months.”UBP Devonshire South Central MP Mr Barritt has long been touted as the favourite person for the top job. UBP Senator Michael Dunkley and BDA leader Craig Cannonier are understood to have been other possible contenders.Mr Barritt is very popular and well-respected as UBP leader of the House, Party Whip and Shadow Minister for Legislative Reform and Justice. The married father-of-three has been an MP since 1993 having formerly worked as a journalist for The Royal Gazette and was then the editor of The Bermuda Sun. He then went to law school and qualified as an attorney, currently working as a consultant attorney with Mello Jones & Martin. There was said to be quite a lot of discussion about the party’s new name with quite a few possible options being put on the table. The source added: “Now that the new name is out there, it will be interesting to hear what people think. We’d be interested to see if people like it.“It’s like we’re testing out the name before the party has officially formed.”The “lengthy merger process” is said to have included lots of behind-the-scenes meetings and phone calls between the main players from the UBP and BDA.Talks between the two parties started before Christmas but both parties have wanted the time to work things through issue-by-issue.Mr Barritt has previously been reported as saying: “It is pretty well known, I think, that I have been involved in talks with members of the BDA with a view to transforming the current political dynamic in Bermuda through the development of a new party from within the UBP and the BDA, which I also happen to believe is in the best interests of Bermuda…I have indicated that I would be prepared to consider any post or position that might help bring this about.”Political websites were already talking about the new details of the political party last night. Politics.bm hinted that it had been “a party name lottery” but said the name wasn’t the most important thing in this merger.PLP public relations officer Curtis Williams said last night: “This reunion isn’t about principle, it’s a premeditated move orchestrated by the same group of politicians that will try anything to regain power.“It’s like the 2003 election all over again; then it was the “New UBP”, this time after the BDA MP’s have gone back home to their old party they now have a new name. OBA = New UBP”PLP Chairman Anthony Santucci added: “Same players, same backers, same policies - new name! The UBP, or whatever they’re calling themselves nowadays, must think the electorate are fools. The wolf can try on all the sheep suits that it wants, but voters still know it’s the wolf.”Mr Barritt did not respond to requests for comment last night, neither did members of the UBP or BDA.
