Outerbridge to run for mayor
A group of candidates calling themselves “Team Hamilton” will challenge the current administration at the City of Hamilton in the coming municipal elections.Former common councillor Graeme Outerbridge will run against Mayor Charles Gosling in the May 10 election as part of the group, promising a renewed focus on those who live within the city.He will be joined by Youth on the Move President Carlton Simmons, entrepreneur Donal Smith and former UBP Chairwoman Gwyneth Rawlins, who will run for the three positions for Aldermen, while lawyer Larry Scott, BIU chief organiser George Scott, Troy Symonds and Anthony Davis will run for Common Councillor.Speaking yesterday, Mr Outerbridge said one of the group's main goals it to remedy imbalances in the city, saying that the corporation has historically placed its focus on Front Street and Reid Street, leaving North Hamilton behind.“Basically, the thing that we want to do is create one city, especially taking care of a lot of the residential issues,” he said.He noted that the May 10 election will be just the second held since the rule of universal adult franchise was put into place in the city, restricting the elections to the around 600 residents.Mr Outerbridge said that as a common councillor, he had fought to democratise the municipality and is pleased to take part in the election under the new rules. While several members of the group have ties to the Progressive Labour Party, he said that Team Hamilton has no formal affiliation to the party, noting his history as leader of the National Liberal Party.“There has been no discussion as to our political affiliations,” he said. “It's a diverse team. We have someone from every sort of background. This is a group that is cohesive and while we don't agree on everything, we definitely agree as a group that we need to move forward to benefit the city.“We are just focusing on what needs to be done in the city.”Larry Scott said that if elected, the team would work to “bring the City of Hamilton into the 21st Century” by improving the Hamilton waterfront, enhancing security for residents and developing more residential living amenities such as cycle tracks and an expansion of the fibre-optic cabling. He acknowledged that finding funding for such projects was a concern, but said that they would initiate talks with Government about wharfage revenue, which the City lost last year.Mayor Gosling announced that he would run for reelection alongside the bulk of his present team.Deputy Mayor and Alderman John Harvey, Aldermen Dennis Tucker and Councillors Walter Cross, Pamela Quarterly and Nicholas Swan will all run for reelection, while Councillor Marshall Minors will run to fill the seat of Alderman left by Pamela Ferreira, who will be retiring.New candidate Roseanne Edwards will also run as part of the team, seeking a position as Common Councillor. The group has vowed to work to integrate North Hamilton and the Economic Empowerment Zone into the rest of the city and boost the area's infrastructure. They have also pledged to continue their push for a City Rangers programme, additional CCTV coverage, improvements to the Hamilton waterfront and greater transparency.
