Veteran politicians Dennis Lister and Michael Scott were yesterday unveiled as general election candidates for Sandys North Central and Sandys North.Premier Paula Cox described the pair as “two pillars of the Progressive Labour Party Government”.Mr Lister noted that this would be the sixth time he has stood for electoral office and said that he has always been willing to listen to his constituents.“Over that length of service there has been many opportunities to work directly with constituents to resolve matters that affect them individually or their neighbourhoods in general,” he said.“As the Premier and my colleagues can attest, it’s not a nine-to-five job and I have always responded with the willingness to assist and look forward to continuing to provide that service to my constituents.”He added that the Sandys 360 centre was a collective project he was proud of.Mr Lister, who has been an MP since 1989, noted that he had sat in parliament with some of the very first PLP MPs, and would be one of two of the longest serving parliamentarians should he be reelected. He touted his experience and knowledge as a backbencher and a former Minister as an advantage.Referring to his interest in green technology, Mr Lister said: “I am pleased to say that the agenda that the Premier has brought to the table is one that includes the green initiative.”Government Estates Minister Michael Scott said that Government was a “listening” Government and would continue to be responsive. He said he would continue to be dedicated to his constituents, but “principally to dealing with being a listener of their concerns, their needs and being responsive”.Voters were concerned about education, especially technical training, the economy and jobs, he said. “We intend to continue to be responsive to, and to listen to these concerns.”Mr Scott said that he would be working to introduce a “meaningful system of apprenticeship” in Dockyard. And he hinted that “welcome news” will soon be coming about replacement housing in Dockyard. The two districts have long been regarded as strongholds of the PLP.In the 2007 election, Mr Scott won 62 percent of the vote in Sandys North. Mr Lister’s showing in Sandys North Central was a bit stronger at 66 percent of the vote.Nadia Hamza and Ray Charlton are the One Bermuda Alliance’s candidates for Sandys North Central and Sandys North respectively.
