Teens offered opportunity to learn horticulture

Government has teamed up with landscaping companies to offer a summer programme for teenage boys interested in a career in horticulture.Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Patrice Minors said the programme will begin on July 9 and involve 25 young men aged 15 to 18.They will be matched with members of the Landscaping Association of Bermuda and shadow industry professionals.Their work will be monitored by the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.Each student will be paid a stipend of $475 at the end of the month-long programme. One course will run in July and one in August.The cost of this will be split between Government and the participating members of the Landscaping Association.In addition, the Bermuda College began a course offering a certificate in Basic Horticulture on May 14.According to the Minister, 12 participants aged 18-24 were sourced primarily from the Department of Labour and Training’s unemployment database.Their field work will include visits to Nonsuch Island where they will learn about plant species and the importance of conservation. The curriculum also includes 15 core subjects including English and Mathematics.Ms Minors said: “Training, in terms of time, effort and expense is an investment which will pay dividends in securing employment and future career advancement for all Bermudians.”She thanked the College and Landscaping Association for their help.
