Term limits meeting

The Pembroke Parish Council will tonight host a public meeting on the topic of term limits.Guest panellists are Walton Brown, PLP Candidate for Pembroke Central, Jeff Baron, OBA Candidate for Pembroke South East, Bermuda Industrial Union President Chris Furbert and political commentator Larry Burchall.Debate over the topic of term limits has been heated in recent years. The current policy limits work permits to a maximum of six years in normal circumstances, but extensions and waivers are possible if the employee is deemed to be key. Employers named as good corporate citizens are also exempt from the policy. The policy is intended to prevent rising numbers of long-term residents expecting Bermudian status. Those who oppose the policy argue that the term limit policy hinders business, driving would-be employers off the Island. The OBA has said it would suspend the policy if elected into power. The meeting is to be held tonight at 7.30pm at the Pembroke Sunday School Hall.Useful website: www.ppcbda.org.
