Governor impressed by Island’s diversity

Help our athletes: Bermuda Olympic Association president, Judy Simons presents Governor George Fergusson with the first tag in advance of the Bermuda Olympic Association Tag Day which will be held on Friday.

Governor George Fergusson highlighted several key points that make Bermuda special during a speech to the Hamilton Rotary Club yesterday.Friendliness, preservation of wildlife, a multilayered culture and ties to historical landmarks in North America were pinpointed as unique features for an Island of our size. The Governor said he’d been surprised by the diversity he’d found since his arrival earlier this year.“One of the most common questions I have been asked since my arrival in Bermuda is how do I like the Island, and my response is that the people are friendly although that is what most people say about Bermuda,” he said.“People would usually be kind to the new Governor regardless, but the people of Bermuda are truly amazing in the fact that they don’t need a reason to speak to you. They just speak to people they don’t know in the most polite way and the reception they give back when you speak is second to none.“I recently went on a stop and search with police officers and was astounded when people were looking over officer’s shoulders to speak to me and not worrying about the actual search that was taking place.”The Governor said he backed efforts to keep native animals in their natural surroundings such as Nonsuch Island, which he recently visited.“Animals that are native to this Island have had to fight with those invading their natural habitats and Bermuda has seen to it that the likes of Nonsuch Island and a few others have been designated parks in order for the local species to the country to enjoy their surrounding as well,” he said.“These efforts here are spectacular.”He praised how the different races interacted on the Island.Said Mr Fergusson: “The cultures here are also fascinating in the fact that there are so many different ethnicities here that all get along with each other, whereas in many other parts of the world it would be difficult to maintain everyone being content in such a small place.”He also noted the Island’s close ties with historical communities and said they should not be allowed to be forgotten or replaced.“Bermuda also has close ties with Nova Scotia and Jamestown, Virginia, the sister town of St George’s.
