Voters have a week to register

With the general election set for December 17, the Island’s voters have a week left to sign up and settle their details with the Parliamentary Registrar. The Registrar’s Reid Street office is open from today, 10am to 5pm, through next Friday, for would-be voters to register. November 16 is the cut-off.Asked how voter response had proved thus far, Parliamentary Registrar Randy Scott said: “Turnout has been extremely healthy so far — it’s looking good.”Mr Scott reckoned that 42,500 voters Bermuda are registered, out of about 45,000.Assistant Parliamentary Registrar Tenia Woolridge reminded voters to check that their details are up to date. The Registrar’s website is www.elections.gov.bm, where voters can register and constituency details and polling stations are also provided. For Mr Scott, December 17 — the date he received in Thursday night’s much-anticipated phone call from Deputy Governor David Arkley — will be election number three.“What generally starts happening is a lot of people decide to get their registration details correct once the writ is issued,” he said. “It’s going to be a busy week.”Advance polling will be offered on December 11, 12 and 13 at the King Street Seventh-Day Adventist Church for voters who are incapacitated or who expect to be off the Island for Election Day.The former will need to bring a letter from the Chief Medical Officer; travellers, meanwhile, should present their documents in advance, at the Registrar’s office, to collect their certificate of absenteeism.November 29 is Nomination Day, when all officially nominated candidates will throw their hats into the ring between 11am and 9pm at the Adventist Hall on King Street.Ms Woolridge added a note of reassurance for voters reluctant to use the web to register.“Whenever you register online you’re asked for a return e-mail address and a telephone number,” she said. “Once it’s approved you’re sent an e-mail to verify; we also call and ask.”
