Devonshire East

Devonshire East has traditionally been an Opposition seat, but the Progressive Labour Party hopes to swing that around at the next general election.Shadow Finance Minister Bob Richards defeated the PLP’s Neville Tyrrell by 402 votes to 375 in December 2007.That marked a huge transformation from four years earlier, when the UBP’s Michael Dunkley beat Mr Tyrrell by 498 votes to 284.Mr Richards and Mr Tyrrell will go head to head again on December 17. Boundary changes since the last election have landed the district 64 voters from Smith’s West and another 22 from Devonshire South Central — both Opposition strongholds.Results2003Neville Tyrrell (PLP) 284 (37 percent)Michael Dunkley (UBP) 498 (64 percent)Registered voters: 1015Turnout 782 (77 percent)2007Neville Tyrrell (PLP) 375 (48 percent)Bob Richards (UBP) 402 (52 percent)Registered voters: 1031Turnout: 777 (75 percent)RaceNational Devonshire EastBLACK 26,062 (64 percent) 573 (56 percent)WHITE 10,278 (25 percent) 342 (33 percent)ASIAN 74 (0.18 percent) 1 (0.09 percent)MIXED 2841 (7 percent) 82 (8 percent)OTHER RACES 1,174 (3 percent) 23 (2 percent)NOT STATED 258 (1 percent) 4 (0.39)Total household incomeNational Constituency 11Under 36000 2,738 6536000 to 71999 5,159 13372000 to 107999 4,831 127108000 to 143999 3,776 95144000 and over 8,958 220Constituency median household income $100,800Island-wide median household income $106,389Total National Constituency 1116-34 10,791 27 percent 254 25 percent35-44 6,570 16 percent 181 18 percent45-54 8,487 21 percent 210 20 percent55-64 6,857 17 percent 167 16 percent65+ 7,982 20 percent 213 21 percent
