PLP offering empty promises on jobs, Opposition’s Bob Richards claims

The Progressive Labour Party’s platform promise to create jobs has been labelled an empty promise by One Bermuda Alliance candidate Bob Richards. The Shadow Minister of Finance urged voters to check the Government’s track record on the creation of jobs over the past ten years.“Bermudians have to ask themselves whether they really believe this Government can ‘create jobs, thousands of jobs,’ as the Premier promised.“The Government’s record over the past decade is one of continuing job losses, not job creation,” said Mr Richards.According to the latest figures he said jobs held by Bermudians declined almost every year from 2001 to 2011 with “more than 2,700 Bermudian-held jobs lost”.“The recent Labour Force Survey shows more than 10,000 Bermudians are either unemployed or underemployed. Nearly 40 percent of young Bermudians don’t have jobs.”Based on the figures, he said the ruling party has a “terrible record”.“Thousands of families are struggling to make ends meet, thousands of Bermudians are suffering grim days every day because they don’t have enough money to pay bills and meet family needs.“All of this came to pass on this Government’s watch. So why should Bermudians believe this Government will now become a job-creation Government?“If it was a job-creation Government, surely thousands of Bermudians would not be struggling today.”Mr Richards concluded: “The only promise this Government can keep is that it will give Bermuda more of the same. And more of the same is not what Bermudians want.“The OBA has put forward a Jobs and Economic Turnaround Plan that will lead Bermuda to better days, growing jobs and opportunity for all. It’s time for change.”
