Glenn Blakeney — Progressive Labour PartyMr Blakeney has been in Parliament since 2003 when he won the Devonshire North Central seat with a 105 vote majority against the United Bermuda Party’s Hilary Soares.“It has never been a safe seat,” he said when The Royal Gazette caught up with him.His only commitment to the voters is “to do my level best serving. That’s all I promise. I always commit to do my best and be loyal to the people I serve”.He was appointed a Cabinet Minister in 2007 when he was re-elected to Parliament. His achievements as the Minister responsible for Sports includes completion of Bermuda’s only Olympic-sized 50-metre swimming pool and multi-tier dive platforms at the National Sports Centre’s new Aquatics Facility. He also piloted legislation to bring Bermuda into compliance with the World Anti Doping Association’s commitment to drug-free sports.Mr Blakeney also takes credit for the Youth Empowerment Scheme, designed to provide employment to eligible youth and the unreasonable hardship amendments of the Human Rights Act for physically challenged people. As area representative, Mr Blakeney resolved complaints about street lighting, had perimeter fencing installed around the Prospect Primary School playing field and a bus shelter at the school entrance. His tenure has also seen roads resurfaced in the Cedar Park, Alexandra Road and the Mary Victoria Road in the Prospect area. And he was responsible for having CCTV installed at Alexandra Road, managing to get a private security agency to sponsor the equipment following concerns by residents.Mr Blakeney is well aware that presiding over one of the largest ministries is no excuse for neglecting constituents.“Constituents in the area, they like to see their representative,” he said.“They raise their eyes in disbelief at the amount of responsibilities in your portfolio. When they understand that you are working they will tend to forgive. But they still want to see their representative. And that’s when you get to understand that no excuse suffices.”In his private life Mr Blakeney is the founder and president of Inter-Island Communications Ltd and the owner of the popular radio stations HOTT 107.5 and MAGIC 102.7.He is married with five children and nine grandchildren.Anthony Francis — One Bermuda AllianceChallenger Anthony Francis is a newcomer to electoral politics but his family background is steeped in politics. He is a first cousin to former Premier Ewart Brown and he is also related to the late Gloria MacPhee who was a stalwart of the United Bermuda Party and the Island’s first female Cabinet Minister.“Accountability and integrity is paramount,” Mr Francis said when asked why he chose the One Bermuda Alliance. “And the OBA has shown me that accountability and integrity is important to them.”Mr Francis had to quit his job as IT manager at the Bermuda Post Office, due to Civil Service rules about political involvement, to run in this election. He had previously served as the Director of Information Services at Berkeley Institute.A father-of-three children, he is committed to the youth. He is also an avid sportsman, having been an executive member of the Bermuda Football Association and a former president of the Bermuda Referees Association.Asked what commitment he is making to the voters of district 13, Mr Francis said he would always be accessible.“The only commitment I’m making is that I’m going to be connected to them. They can call me at anytime before, during and after the election two years from now and I will come and I will visit with them,” he said.“They can stop me in the street. They can knock on my door because I live in the constituency. That’s the only promise I’m making.”
