Michael Dunkley of the One Bermuda Alliance swept to victory in Smith’s North last night, defeating the Progressive Labour Party’s Patrice Minors two to one.Mr Dunkley stormed Constituency 10 with 618 votes, to 298 cast in support of Ms Minors.The elated candidate said he was “very humbled by the support the people of Smith’s North have shown me”.“I realise there’s a big challenge ahead of me,” Mr Dunkley added.He attributed the rout to “hard work and preparation, building relationships that work”.“I have dealt with the people from one end of the constituency to the other — we are family, and I have got their back.”His next task, he said, was to “meet with my colleagues when the final results are in, give them a hug, and talk about the hard work that lies ahead”.Putting on a brave face as she left the polling station, Ms Minors told The Royal Gazette: “To be quite honest, I am not surprised.“I sensed in my spirit that it would be a result not in my favour, but I had to put on the face of one seeking victory.”She said her concerns now lay not with her defeat, but “collectively with the PLP”.As the Economy Minister in a constituency where jobs and national debt dominated voter concerns, Ms Minors said she knew she faced a tough battle.Boundary changes to the district also took away “strong support that was based in Loyal Hill”, she said, adding: “Life goes on.”The night finished with five rejected ballots, and an overall turnout of 76 percent of the 1,206 registered voters in the district, considered a key marginal in the race.RESULTS:Michael Dunkley (OBA): 618Patrice Minors (PLP): 298
