Warwick South East

A little bit of political history was made last night when Progressive Labour Party candidate Lawrence Scott replaced his father as the MP for Warwick South East.Mr. Scott took 467 votes to One Bermuda Alliance candidate Ms. Alexis Swan’s 403. Independent candidate David W. Burch received 8 votes and there were 4 spoiled votes. Both the main candidates, young and energetic, had worked hard in the constituency and there was clearly a feeling of mutual respect as they chatted together and with their supporters outside the polling station during the day.At lunchtime Ms Swan had remarked that the atmosphere around the polling station was very friendly — “Lawrence and I have had a few laughs” — but it was no laughing matter at the end with Ms Swan clearly very distraught at the result.Mr. Burch claimed that he had received a good welcome on the doorsteps but felt the Independent candidates will gain a lot more in future elections. “The two party system will never work. It needs coalition government” he stated.Mr. Scott left the polling station at the start of the count and was unavailable later for comment. Ms Swan declined to comment following the announcement of the final result. There were four spoiled ballots, with 878 votes cast, representing 85.8 percent of the vote.RESULTS:Lawrence Scott (PLP) 467Alexis Swan (OBA) 403David W.
