Burgess questions tendering of Govt insurance contracts

Government insurance contracts should be tendered out and bid on “fairly” by other insurance companies, says Shadow Minister of Public Works Derrick Burgess. He questioned Government’s insurance of motor vehicles and property in the House of Assembly and directed his questions to the Minister of Public Works Trevor Moniz.Mr Burgess wanted to know to whom and how much the Government pays to insure its vehicles and property annually. In response Mr Moniz said: “For both property and motor vehicle insurance policies, the insurer is Argus Insurance Company. Centurion Insurance Services, a division of Argus Insurance, is the Government’s insurance broker. As such, all payments for Government insurance policies are funnelled through the same. In turn, they are responsible for remitting funds to the appropriate insurer for any claims.”Mr Burgess then asked what “the total dollar value of claims for the years 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, by vehicle and property payments received?”According to the policies provided by Mr Moniz, the Government has made $870,659 in claims paid regarding the main fleet of motor vehicles from April 2009 to 2013, while the premiums totalled $2,851,000.The policy regarding Government’s main property revealed $568,736 claims paid between 2010-2012, while premiums from 2009 to 2013 totalled $34,691,739.65. No claims were paid from 2009 to 2010 or from 2012 to 2013.Mr Burgess said: “You know, when you think about this time of the year, I don't think there's been many Government buildings that had been damaged in any storms, none that I can recall during over five years of me being there.“For the premium that we are paying, it seems like a very lucrative piece of business for the insurance companies. I'm just hoping that in future, in the near future, this contract is put out for tender for other insurance companies to bid on.”
