Govt MP Davis arrested

Government MP Nandi Davis

Government MP Nandi Davis was arrested and charged in relation to a domestic incident, The Royal Gazette understands.Police declined to confirm the arrest yesterday, while Government claimed to have no knowledge of the arrest, stating only that it understood that police were “looking into” a complaint relating to the rookie politician. But this newspaper understands that the St George’s West MP was arrested on Thursday evening and charged with one count of causing wilful damage.A Police spokesman yesterday declined to comment on the case, saying that it was routine policy not to name suspects before they had appeared before the courts.Ms Davis made headlines last month after it was reported that a series of offensive messages were apparently sent from her Facebook account at the end of June. Ms Davis denied responsibility for the messages, claiming that the account had been hacked. She also said that she had reported the matter to police and hired the law firm Marshall, Diel and Myers with a view to taking legal action. Then last month, a 24-year-old Hamilton woman who claimed to have received the messages also claimed that her car was vandalised, with offensive words scratched into the paintwork. The woman reported both incidents to police. It is understood that Ms Davis has now employed the services of top attorney Saul Froomkin to represent her.One Bermuda Alliance party chairman Thad Hollis yesterday failed to return repeated calls to his cell phone made by this newspaper. Attempts to speak to officials at the party’s headquarters on Reid Street also failed, with staff claiming that nobody was available for comment. And when this newspaper telephoned Ms Davis’s workplace, a colleague explained that the politician would be absent for the day.A statement from a Government spokesperson played down the incident, making no mention of any arrest.“It is our understanding that a complaint has been filed with the police and that they are looking into it,” the statement said.“We are not at liberty to offer any comment. That’s all we know. Any further questions should be forwarded to her lawyer — Saul Froomkin.”A source close to the party added that it was felt the media “frenzy” over the story was out of place and that, if any charges have been laid, Ms Davis should be considered innocent until proven guilty. The source added they thought it unlikely that the party would consider taking action against the MP until any legal proceedings had been completed.“If the case is to be prosecuted, Ms Davis deserves her day in court,” the source said.“In the meantime, party members are being as supportive as possible.”The source also dismissed rumours that party officials, including Premier Craig Cannonier and Mr Hollis, were in crisis talks yesterday to discuss the situation.Ms Davis, 26, a recently-married executive assistant, won the St George’s West seat at last December’s general election, ousting incumbent Kim Swan by a margin of just four votes.A spokesman for the Opposition Progressive Labour Party also declined to comment on the matter when contacted by The Royal Gazette.
