Premier to address Public Service reform mandate

The House of Assembly returns today after a spate of sessions which have been comparatively brief owing to a seeming lack of legislation to debate and pass.

Bermuda’s lower chamber is not set to address the delayed, planned, $376 million Fairmont Southampton hotel complex revamp.

Scott Pearman, the Shadow Minister of Home Affairs, told The Royal Gazette: “David Burt’s Progressive Labour Party have completely run out of steam. They have lost the will to govern.

“At the last two sessions of the House there has been only one Bill debated on each occasion. Where are the ideas? Where are the solutions to Bermuda's problems? The PLP has run out of gas.”

A PLP spokeswoman responded: “Mr Pearman knows that governing does not only require the amending of Bills but also changes to policies and regulations.

“As usual, the OBA offers no ideas or solutions and only wants to launch silly attacks via the media while supporting the PLP’s legislation in Parliament. For this entire House of Assembly summer session, the OBA has been silent on the motion to adjourn. Maybe tomorrow, they will speak to the people from the people's house rather than trying to lob silly attacks through The Royal Gazette.”

MPs will discuss the 45th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s Caribbean Regional Conference, and the 13th Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians’ conference in Turks & Caicos.

Jason Hayward, Minister of Economy and Labour, will bring forward the Financial Assistance Amendment Regulations 2023, and the Child Day Care Allowance Amendment Regulations.

Mr Hayward is also talking on child daycare allowance benefits. David Burt, the Premier and Minister of Finance, addresses the Public Service reform mandate.

Vance Campbell, the tourism minister, talks to the Tourism Investment Act 2017 Awareness.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, will present an update on road works, while Diallo Rabain, Minister of Education, will speak on senior school graduations.

Michael Weeks, national security minister, will present a report on the fire service.

The presentation comes after the One Bermuda Alliance accused the Government of a “sneaky” U-turn by restoring 24 hour ambulance cover across the island after initially concentrating resources to LF Wade International Airport from the beginning of April.

Wayne Furbert, the Minister of Transport, will present the Motor Car (Classic Cars) Amendment Act 2023.

There will also be the second reading of the Investment Funds Amendment Act 2023, introduced by Mr Burt.

The Premier will also address the Contributory Pensions (Amendment of Benefits) (No 2) Order 2023.
