The Bermuda branch of Conservatives Abroad, an organisation for members of the British Conservative Party in Bermuda, has been re-established as changes in voter eligibility in Britain prepare to come into place.

A spokesman for the group said: “This initiative signifies a new chapter in connecting and empowering the British community in Bermuda, fostering a more involved and informed political discourse.”

The newly reformed group recently celebrated its return with an event with Simon Glass, a former chairman of Conservatives Abroad Perth.

The spokesman said: “As a leading venture capitalist and entrepreneur with a rich international background, including residencies in Australia, the US and Bermuda, Mr Glass brought interesting anecdotes and stories to the occasion.”

The spokesman said that the return of the group coincided with “imminent changes” in voter eligibility rules for British citizens living abroad.

“The upcoming abolition of the ‘15-year rule’ will allow anyone who has resided in the UK for at least a year and holds British citizenship to participate in general elections and future referenda,” the spokesman said.

“This change significantly expands the democratic rights of the British community overseas.

“Throughout 2024, the Bermuda branch of Conservatives Abroad plans to host various policy forum events. These forums will serve as a platform for members to contribute their ideas on policies that the UK Conservative Party should pursue, fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment for political engagement.

“Moreover, under the UK Conservative Party's rules, members play a crucial role in leadership selection, having the final say in determining the party leader. This empowers members with a direct influence on the party's direction and leadership.
