More than 30 young people took part in the first event of a series designed to boost the voices of Bermuda’s younger generation.

Consultation 2 Conference was held at CedarBridge Academy on May 10 when talks covered safeguarding and antisocial behaviour, education, employment, health, diversity and inclusion.

The session was hosted by the Office of Youth Affairs in partnership with the National Youth Policy Working Group.

Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, said: “This event is not just a meeting of minds, it is a vital step in our commitment to listen, learn and collaborate with Bermuda’s young people in shaping our island’s future.

“Participants were encouraged to speak openly and honestly on the observations, recommendations and challenges that are faced by young people in Bermuda.

“Participants embraced this directive fully, which led to a dialogue that was both thought provoking and inspiring.

“The National Youth Policy guides our vision, and it is driven by the belief that young people deserve to be at the centre of the decision-making processes that affect their lives and communities.

“The insights of our young people are not just valuable, they are essential.”

The gathering also provided an opportunity for attendees to expand upon the recommendations put forward by the National Youth Policy Working Group, which will help inform the ministry’s approach to policy and programme development.

The C2C series will continue in July with the National Youth Conference, offering another opportunity to build upon the ideas and momentum established in the first session.

Ms Furbert added: “TOYA and the National Youth Policy Working Group remain committed to ensuring that these conversations are not symbolic but instead form the foundation for lasting change that reflects the needs and aspirations of Bermuda’s youth.”
