Speaker shares special moment with King Charles III
Dennis Lister, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, met King Charles III in London this week.
Mr Lister shared updates on Bermuda’s House of Assembly, the oldest continuous parliament outside Westminster, with the King.
The monarch received him in a private audience, during which he expressed condolences on the passing of the Speaker’s wife, Miranda Lister.
Kimberley Durrant and Brandon Sousa, from the London Office, supported Mr Lister while he took part in the Commons and Overseas Territories Speakers’ Conference.
Participants in the conference, hosted by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, discussed issues such as parliamentary independence, transparency, security and the emergence of artificial intelligence with fellow Speakers and UK Members of Parliament.
Mr Lister, who has been a Progressive Labour Party MP for Sandys since 1989, was also recognised as one of the longest-serving parliamentarians in the Overseas Territories.
A government spokeswoman said: “The continued success of COTSC emphasises the value of principled engagement on matters of mutual parliamentary interest.
“Mr Lister’s participation reaffirms Bermuda’s long history of independent legislation, strong parliamentary procedure and political maturity.”
