Burt on tax breaks: savings are real and they matter
David Burt said a series of tax breaks and social investments underscores the Government’s commitment to reducing the cost of living in Bermuda.
The Premier was speaking after the passage of relief measures in the Senate on Thursday.
The Senate heard that, starting on July 1, residents will see a 50 per cent cut in mobile phone taxes and, from next January, a 50 per cent cut in the base land tax rate.
These join other reductions in the Budget including in fuel tax and vehicle licensing fees, the elimination of duty on motor vehicle parts and the introduction of a flat 10 per cent duty on building materials to support homeowners and builders.
Mr Burt told The Royal Gazette: “These savings are real and they matter.
“Fairness in action isn't just about tax cuts, it’s also about social investment. That’s why this Budget also includes $14.9 million in new funding for counselling, mental health services, support to address homelessness and youth and family intervention.
“We’ve also expanded prescription drug coverage, eliminated delays in in-home care benefits for seniors and boosted funding for scholarships, workforce development, entrepreneurship and grants for community clubs.
“No one budget can fix everything overnight but this year's Budget delivers relief and invests in areas that will bring about meaningful relief and additional support for the community.
“As a government, we will continue to go as far as our resources allow to build a fairer, more affordable Bermuda.”
