House to debate insurance and trademark amendments
Members of Parliament will return to the House of Assembly to debate two pieces of legislation today.
Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, is expected to lead a debate on the Trademarks Amendment Act 2025 to update the island’s intellectual property framework.
The amendment will also keep the legislation in compliance with the Madrid Protocol, an international treaty created to simplify trademark registration.
Meanwhile, David Burt, the Premier and Minister of Finance, will lead the debate on the Insurance Amendment Act 2025, which will enable the Bermuda Monetary Authority to make rules in relation to statutory financial statements.
Although the session is light on legislation, a raft of ministers will deliver statements to the House.
Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour is one of six minister who will present eight statements to parliamentary colleagues.
Mr Hayward will give an update on the 2024 labour force survey and also address factors driving emigration in Bermuda.
Home affairs minister Alexa Lightbourne will also deliver two statements, giving survey insights and plans for a proposed cost-of-living summit, and addressing negative resolutions to two 2023 electricity regulation acts.
Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Transport, Culture and Sport, will highlight the importance of next week’s National Heroes Day celebrations, while health minister Kim Wilson will give an update on mental health initiatives.
Diallo Rabain, the Minister of the Cabinet Office and Digital Innovation, will explain how the island celebrated International Archives Day on Monday and Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, will speak about youths rising against violence.
Mr Burt will face questions from Opposition leader Jarion Richardson on a number of financial issues, including the status of several regulatory initiatives and cybersecurity improvements in the financial sector.
