David Burt, the Premier, is in Jamaica this weekend attending an annual meeting of the heads of Caribbean leaders.

A government spokeswoman said Mr Burt, accompanied by home affairs minister Alexa Lightbourne and government backbencher Christopher Famous, “will participate in high-level discussions” covering a range of topics.

She added: “The annual Caricom heads of government conference provides a platform for regional co-operation on issues such as climate resilience, trade, food security, health, education, technology and regional security.

“This year’s meeting is taking place as more countries and territories are collaborating on national and global challenges, advancing shared development opportunities. Premier Burt will also update regional counterparts on Bermuda’s progress in areas such as digital finance.”

The spokeswoman said Bermuda “continues to benefit from engagement across various sectors, including youth development, public health and education” since joining the group as an associate member in 2003.

The Government is now exploring full membership of Caricom.

Mr Burt said today that he was proud of Bermuda’s presence at the meeting.

He added: “Our associate membership has enabled collaboration across various sectors, and we look forward to strengthening these relationships.

“In a time of increasing economic and geopolitical uncertainty, regional partnerships and collaboration are more important than ever. We remain committed to deepening our engagement with the region as we pursue shared goals of economic progress, climate resilience and development for our people.”

Mr Burt is scheduled to return to Bermuda on Tuesday.
