Opposition MPs wish new party leader luck
One Bermuda Alliance MPs shared thoughts on their new party leader during the first sitting of the House of Assembly after the summer break.
Michael Fahy, the Shadow Minister of Home Affairs, attended Robert King’s swearing-in ceremony at Government House on Wednesday and fully backed the new Opposition leader.
Douglas DeCouto, the Shadow Minister of Finance, was also at the event on Wednesday but had previously supported Ben Smith, the Shadow Minister of Education and Sport, for party leader in correspondence seen by The Royal Gazette this month.
Jarion Richardson, the former Opposition leader and Scott Pearman, deputy leader and Shadow Attorney-General, were said to have been off the island during the swearing-in.
Robert King left his first parliamentary session as Leader of the Opposition early today owing to illness.
Scott Pearman, the Shadow Attorney-General and Deputy Leader of the Opposition, confirmed Mr King’s absence in the House and congratulated him on being elected leader.
Mr Richardson wished Mr King luck and Mr Pearman congratulated him in the House of Assembly this afternoon.
Mr Pearman said: “Let me say that Robert King is a man of both courage and conviction.
“It is not easy to serve and I know that all other 35 members of this chamber will agree with me when I say that it places great demands on personal time.
“It places great demand sometimes on health and it certainly places great demands on family.
“All of those who put themselves to serve in this way recognise that way, and it is therefore immensely brave for Robert King to put himself forward to stand in that capacity.”
Mr Pearman thanked other members of the OBA who participated in the party’s leadership election last weekend.
“In each and every way, we are here to serve, we are here to bring our best to the game and do what we can do to serve the people of Bermuda,” he said.
Neither Craig Cannonier, the Shadow Minister of Public Works and Environment, nor Robin Tucker, the Shadow Minister of Health, were at the event on Wednesday, but both wished Mr King luck today.
OBA MPs Mr Smith, Dwayne Robinson, Linda Smith and Vance Campbell were unavailable for comment.
