Real-time service updates in Shorelink project welcomed
Positive feedback has been received from passengers who gained access to real-time information about bus and ferry services as part of phase 2 of Shorelink, the transport minister said today.
In the House of Assembly, Owen Darrell said the feature went live on the public transportation app on August 5 for Apple and Android phones, enabling passengers to see live vehicle locations, predicted arrival times and service updates.
Mr Darrell said public feedback has been “overwhelmingly positive”, with visitors and residents praising how “seamlessly the app delivers real-time information, is user-friendly and particularly valuable for seniors and children, who benefit from knowing how long they may need to wait”.
He added: “Shorelink is our multiphase modernisation of Bermuda’s public transport system.
“Phase 1 digitised ticketing and demonstrated strong public adoption.
“Phase 2 builds upon that foundation with GPS-enabled, real-time information across buses and ferries, moving us from plan-and-pay to real-time public transport.
“Public confidence is critical to public transport.
“With real-time tracking, passengers can time their walk to the pick-up point, check for disruptions and make route decisions dynamically, especially during peak periods or inclement weather.
“This is a significant shift in service quality — less waiting, more certainty and a better experience overall.”
Mr Darrell thanked the Department of Public Transportation and the Department of Marine and Ports Services for their operational insight, which he said ensured data accuracy, so that riders saw reliable, real-time updates.
He added that phase 3 was “focused on further enhancing convenience and on-board payment flexibility”.
“We will update the House as these capabilities move from testing to live service,” Mr Darrell said.
