Regiment anniversary salute to ‘thousands who served’
Six decades of dedicated service from the Royal Bermuda Regiment were marked with pride during the Friday sitting of the House of Assembly.
Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, traced its story to September 1, 1965, when the largely segregated Bermuda Militia Artillery and the Bermuda Volunteer Rifle Corps amalgamated as a unified force.
More than 11,000 men and women have worn its uniform over the 60 years since, which included the civil unrest of 1977, the General Strike of 1981, the terrorist attacks on the US during September 11, 2001, and “the carnage caused by major hurricanes, among them Hurricane Emily in 1987 and Hurricane Fabian in 2003”, Mr Weeks told MPs.
The RBR was also embodied to support public health during the Covid-19 pandemic — and has served many times off the island’s shores.
Mr Weeks said the diamond anniversary would culminate with a Presentation of Colours at The Keep, in the National Museum of Bermuda in Dockyard, on October 18.
The island will also get an official visit from the Duchess of Gloucester, the regiment’s Colonel-in-Chief, from October 16 through 20.
