Adams: most major roads repaved, made safer

The Minister of Public Works and Environment gave the House of Assembly an update today on the restoration of Bermuda’s roads.

Jaché Adams said the efforts to repave and “modernise” the network were almost complete, with most repairs done and safety measure in place.

He promised that the first quarter of 2026 would be “the most productive in recent memory”.

Mr Adams said: “The condition of our roads has become one of the most talked-about issues throughout our island.

“Our people have been clear that they want action, not excuses, and this government is delivering just that.

“While others offer commentary from the sidelines, this administration is pouring asphalt, rebuilding foundations and progressing forward with the most consistent road-repaving effort Bermuda has seen in years.”

Mr Adams reminded the House of the “long-overdue” repairs to the retaining wall along Somerset Road in Sandys that were completed.

He said the lanes between Scaur Hill and George’s Bay were redone for the first time in decades.

Mr Adams added that a section of Middle Road between George’s Bay and Evan’s Bay in Southampton has been repaved.

“For thousands of daily commuters,” he said, “the difference was immediate and noticeable.”

Mr Adams said that Mullet Bay from York Street to Ferry Reach Road in St George’s was next to be finished, in time to ease traffic during Cup Match.

Middle Road and North Shore Road in Smith’s were repaved from Bethel Church, through Flatts and towards Jennings Road.

Mr Adams said: “It should be noted that along the way, the team encountered minor issues at several locations requiring temporary skips.

“Rather than slowing down, we pushed forward, addressing the issues while continuing to pave.

“That is the hallmark of a ministry focused on delivery and not delay.”

He added: “These are not isolated road patches.

“These are connected corridors of safer, smoother, more reliable infrastructure that Bermudians rely upon every single day.”

To ensure safety, Mr Adams said, new traffic beacons were installed at Mullet Bay, Point Finger Road in Paget and Somerset Village.

Speed bumps were placed in Spice Hill, Brighton Hill and Parsons Road.

Mr Adams said that similar “traffic-calming measures” would be placed along Church Road in Southampton and Old Military Road in St George’s.

He said: “These locations were not only highlighted by residents but were also validated through technical reviews carried out by our road-safety team, which confirmed visibility challenges, pedestrian risk and traffic-flow concerns.”

Mr Adams added: “These are areas where our children walk, where seniors cross and where families have long expressed legitimate concerns.”

The minister said the last piece of road left was the western end of North Shore Road, which was hoped to be completed before the end of the year.

At the start of next year, Mr Adams said, crews would focus on a section of North Shore Road near the aquarium and other areas of Smith’s.

Middle Road between Lighthouse Road in Southampton and Longford Road in Warwick will be tackled next, followed by Spanish Point Road and Palmetto Road in Pembroke.

Addressing the “faint and sometimes nonexistent centre line,” Mr Adams said the roadworks team received the parts needed for the ministry’s existing centre line machine and that work will begin shortly.

He added that the ministry was prepared to order a new centre-marking machine.
